VoiceMale are a group of men from a variety of backgrounds and with a broad range of musical experience, who meet every week to share the joy of singing, in good company.
We sing a wide range of songs, in exciting vocal arrangements, mainly from the North East folk repertoire, but including gospel, world music and contemporary popular songs. Our two hour rehearsals, starting at 7:30 each Wednesday at the Morpeth Methodist Church, though focused are relaxed and informal and usually end with earnest discussions over a pint in the Tap & Spile. |
VoiceMale is a men’s choir – but definitely not a straightforward 'British male voice choir’ – the choir came into being following an initiative by 20,000 Voices in January 2001, under the inspirational leadership and direction of Sandra Kerr. A few years down the line the baton was passed to Graham Stacy who ably and inspiringly led the choir until his retirement in 2021 and the baton was then handed on to a young and highly respected Folk musician Jon Doran.
The choir is based, and has deep roots, in the North East of England. and the choir’s broad repertoire includes traditional songs from the British Isles, with particular emphasis on the rich and varied tradition of our own region – Northumberland and Tyneside – together with contemporary material and folk songs from around the World. Arrangements by our Musical Director Jon Doran can range from the traditional to the exciting and innovative and are performed with wit and humour. |
The growing reputation and popularity of the choir have lead to concert performances throughout the region and diary bookings for many months ahead. The choir have performed at the Coleraine International Choral Festival in Northern Ireland, toured in Slovenia and traveled twice to perform in Burgdorf in Germany.
Voicemale have recorded three CDs – two of them together with Werca’s Folk, the Northumbrian women’s choir directed by Sandra Kerr. |

We welcome new members who share our love of singing and good company.
You don't need to be able to read music (few of us do)
- we learn everything by ear!

"I love to hear a choir. I love the humanity... to see the faces of real people devoting themselves to a piece of music. I like the teamwork. It makes me feel optimistic about the human race when I see them cooperating like that."- Paul McCartney
